Chapter Eight

“I don’t like this one fucking bit,” Shane snarled.

“Neither do I, yet here we are,” Luke replied.

He still didn’t know why the other leaders of the Loyalty had thought it was a good idea to invite Shane of all shifters along on their mission, yet there he stood in all his snarkiness. If was any consolation, Max didn’t appear to be happy with having Shane along either. Then again, Shane and Max were both Leopards, and that type of feline hated their own kind. It was a miracle the pair managed to live in Flint together.

Shane glared at Calvin. “Your boy here has a huge bounty on his head. It was just raised again today. Every freelance Assassin is going to be gunning for him. You should keep him in that dump of yours. He certainly shouldn’t be out in the open like this.”

“The boy can hear, and this is my house, so I can be here if I want to,” Calvin snapped.

A feeling of pride went through Luke. There weren’t too many Assassins brave enough to stand up to Shane, yet Calvin, an untrained fighter, had done just that. He even returned Shane’s glare. Luke still moved a bit closer to Calvin. Better to be safe than sorry.

Shane finally cracked a small grin. “You have some backbone in you. I like that. Is it true that you ate your master?”

“Well, I ripped out his throat and nibbled on him a bit. I didn’t really go as far as to eat him. He had a rancid aftertaste,” Calvin drawled.

“You still got the message across, and that’s all that matters,” Shane replied.

Calvin didn’t reply. Instead, he continued to make his way through the home. Even before he opened the closet doors, Luke already knew what would be there…nothing. Calvin’s parents hadn’t even left behind a hanger. They’d taken everything with them.

“They could have at least left me my own damn clothes,” Calvin declared before he slammed a door shut.

“Were they ever distant or abusive toward you?” Shane asked.

Calvin shrugged. “We weren’t the Bradys or anything, but they were never cruel. I never would have thought that they would ditch me like this.”

Shane scratched his jaw. “Yet since you moved here they never took you to the Coalition, not even to see one of our doctors.”

“What are you trying to get at?” Calvin narrowed his eyes.

“It just seems like they were trying to hide something,” Shane replied. “Why did they move to Flint in the first place?”

“Because my dad’s work transferred him here. He wasn’t happy about it, though. He told me I couldn’t have any contact with Mitchell or the Coalition. He never wanted me to talk to other shifters. The only reason he allowed me to be friends with Conner was because he was a Koala,” Calvin said.

Luke was getting a suspicious nag in the back of his head. Shane was right, as much as it bothered Luke to admit. Calvin’s parents were hiding something. It had to be pretty big too.
